Are you looking for a fun and imaginative gift for the young kids on your gift giving list? This Gingerbread Play-dough Cookie Making Kit is sure to spark creativity and add extra cheer this holiday season. It is quick and easy to put together with my printable labels and a bit of cooking to mix up the gingerbread scented dough.
For the play-dough I followed this simple stovetop recipe:
The dough came together quite easily and the addition of the spices helped give it a rich brown color and made it smell just like gingerbread!
Once my dough was prepared, I wanted a fun way to package it for gift giving. I was inspired by the ready made cookie dough you can find in the grocery store, and decided to package it similarly. I rolled my cooled dough into long log shape and wrapped it tightly in cellophane tied with ribbon at each end. To ensure it was not mistaken for edible cookie dough, I also created a cute Gingerbread Play-dough label to tape around it.
And, then the fun part – finding all the cooking tools and decorations to help the little bakers transform the dough into “cookies”. A trip to IKEA made quick work of assembling all the cookie cutters, cookie sheet and rolling pin thanks to their great DUKTIG 7 piece toy baking set. At only $12.99 CDN it is a great value, and my kids love that their are just smaller versions of the same items I use for baking. I was happy there was even a gingerbread man cookie cutter right in the set!
If you are not near an IKEA, you could probably pick up the cutters and a small rolling pin at a dollar store.
For more fun after the dough was rolled and cut-out, I filled plastic spice jars with a variety of craft supplies. Googly eyes, pom-poms, buttons, sequins and ribbon got candy inspired labels to make it feel like items you would really use for cookie decorating.
To finish the gift, I decided to wrap everything up in a vinyl tablecloth that could be used to protect the table during play. A thick ribbon tied it all together and an item list and the gingerbread man cookie cutter added a touch of whimsy.
My kids were excited to get open the bundle and get down to making and decorating cookies. Cutting out and decorating gingerbread cookies is a fun holiday activity and I love that this lets them have the experience whenever they want to without having to involve me actually making cookies.
This would make a great shared gift to give to nieces and nephews, neighbours or friends. It was budget friendly and I love that it encourages imaginative play.
