Welcome to one of my latest crazy projects.
For our ice cream social this year, I decided to go with a Peanuts theme and wanted matching themed costumes to get a cute photo of my kids for the invitation. Since seeing the Peanuts Movie way back in the winter, I have had it in my mind that my son would make a great Charlie Brown and his blonde haired little sister would be the perfect Sally.
A while back I picked up a cute blue polo dress on clearance at Old Navy and knew right away it would work perfect for this project. I was then lucky to find a inexpensive bright yellow polo shirt in my son’s size at Walmart. To transform my two articles of clothing, all I needed was some black fabric paint and foam paint brushes.
I used chalk to trace out Charlie Brown’s signature chevron stripe onto the yellow polo shirt and carefully painted it in with a foam brush. The ink lines in the actual comic strip are quite freehand so I liked that I didn’t have to be perfectly straight and I left a few spots unpainted to look more like the inked comic strip. (Don’t forget to place a piece of thick cardboard in between the front and back of the shirt/dress just in case the paint soaks through.)
For Sally’s dress, I found a round stamp tipped brush that made it super easy to stamp (imperfect) random polka dots all over the entire dress. I was a bit torn with Sally’s dress because I have seen it in both pink and blue. The blue ended up being a good choice once I showed my daughter a picture of Sally and she declared “No, I want to be that mean girl!”. She meant Lucy, and since her signature dress is typically blue, I was able to let my daughter pretend that was who she was.
The kids weren’t the most cooperative for the photos, but I did manage to get a few decent shots I could use for the invitation. I think we’ll head out again with a football come fall for some more fun Peanut’s inspired shots. We may even have to drag our hound dog along as Snoopy. 😉
And they were happy to wear the outfits again at our actual ice cream social. I can’t wait to share all the other fun party details soon!
