How Your Kids Can Become Parks Canada Xplorers

Parks Canada _ Xplorers Program

Last summer we spent a lot of time exploring our National Parks both here in Alberta and into British Columbia.  I was worried some of it might get a bit boring for our young children, and was pleasantly surprised at how much fun they had being in the great outdoors and discovering everything the parks had to offer.

Parks Canada _ Xplorers Program

While staying in and touring Banff, one great discovery we made was the Parks Canada Xplorers program.  Geared towards kids, this program is based around completing a number of tasks in a free activity booklet and earning a collectible souvenir for your effort.  The booklets are available from the front gates, campgrounds or information centers and are filled with fun kid based activities such as spot the difference or word searches that relate specifically to tourist sites in the area.

Unlocking Magic at the Disney Store

Unlocking Magic At The Disney Store_Store Opening Ceremony

It should come as no surprise that one of the kids and I’s favorite stores is the Disney Store.  Although there are two here in Edmonton, we don’t seem to get to the malls that often and that means the kids are always excited to spend a good chunk of time checking out the new merchandise and playing in store.

Several months ago I hit up the mall while the kids were in school, and just happened to walk by first thing as the Disney Store was doing a special store opening ceremony.  I learned this is something they do daily and have been meaning to take the kids, so last week my daughter and I finally went to see what it was all about.  She was still too young for the Lego Monthly Mini Build I had her brother signed up for that evening, so I figured this was something special her and I could do that day. Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na BIRTHDAY!

The Lego Batman Movie_Birthday Party Planning

The Lego Batman Movie is coming out this week and the kids and I can’t wait to see it in theater!  We loved the first Lego Movie, and the new Batman version looks hilarious.  I have been following The LEGO Batman Movie on Facebook and the clips they share always crack me up.

When I saw that the release date for the movie was just a couple weeks before my son’s 7th birthday, I knew immediately that it would make a great party option for him and his friends.  I will admit that it took a little convincing to get him on board with the idea since he had his heart set on laser tag, but seeing the previews has made him just as excited as me.  He is still a bit young for laser tag, so we will keep that as an option for a future birthday party.

Disney Inspired Treats: Tomato Basil Soup

DIsneyInspiredTreats_Tomato Basil Soup Homemade Soup Day February 4

It can get mighty chilly in Edmonton in the winter months and that has me wanting soup.  Since National Homemade Soup Day just happens to be February 4, I thought for my February Disney inspired treat I would make up a pot inspired by one of the delicious meals I had while in Disneyland Park: the Jolly Holiday Combo.  This meal of tomato basil soup and a grilled cheese sandwich is served at the Holly Jolly Bakery and is a nice change from the hot dogs, pizza, French fries and other sugar laden goodies we ate way too much of throughout the park.  It might not fit most the standard definition of a “treat”, but it is a definite step up from the can of tomato soup I usually heat up on the stove.

Red Roses to Remember Dad

Remembering Dad with Red Roses

Today marks 15 years since my dad unexpectedly passed away during the night from complications of pneumonia.  I am still sad that I never got to say a final good-bye, but also relieved that he passed quickly and there was no prolonged suffering.  We all knew he had extensive health issues, but I don’t think any of us were expecting to say good bye so soon.

Earning Dollars for Disney with Dory

Earning Dollars for Disney _ Dory Sticker Reward Chart

About a month before Christmas I came across these behaviour sticker charts at Dollarama.  I had actually looked over them on previous trips to the store, but after a week of trying behaviour from both my children I grabbed two out of desperation.
